Professor Don Turnbull talk @ FCSH: "Making Search Better" - FCSH UNL, Auditório 3 (Main tower, 5th Fl.)

The goal of improving information seeking and retrieval is currently at its zenith both in industry and academia. However, there are still many challenges to be met towards the goal of innovating to improve search for everyone, in every applicable context. This talk will review a set of developing ideas and some ongoing research including personalization, filtering, user-defined metadata and information architecture that provide both research and development opportunities with potential impact to advance search utility.

About Don Turnbull:

Don Turnbull is an assistant professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin. Don's teaching and research focuses on designing information architectures, informmation retrieval, information systems analysis, the semantic web and knowledge management systems. Previously, Don was the Director of Advanced Development at Outride, Inc., a Xerox PARC spin-off company that specialized in personalized information retrieval applications and related intellectual property, that was acquired by Google. He continues to work with industry as a consultant specializing in search systems, analytics and patents research and development. Don received his doctorate from the University of Toronto focusing on Knowledge Discovery (Data Mining) for Informetric and Behavioral Models of Web Use.
