Media e democracia (novos docs do Conselho da Europa)

Alerting member States to the risk of misuse of the power of the media in a situation of strong media concentration and its potential consequences for political pluralism and for democratic processes, on 31 January 2007 the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe adopted a Declaration on protecting the role of the media in democracy in the context of media concentration. Two Committee of Ministers' Recommendations were also adopted on the same occasion. The first addresses media pluralism and diversity of media content, particularly in the light of digitisation and other technological developments. The second Recommendation, on the remit of public service media in the information society, calls upon member states to guarantee the fundamental role of the public service media in the new digital environment, enabling them to promote broader democratic, social and cultural participation and offers guiding principles on how the public service remit should be developed and adapted by member states to suit the new digital environment.
