The European Parliament approved new EU rules on TV advertising and product placement

Advertising - Any form of announcement whether in return for payment or for similar consideration by a private or public undertaking in connection with trade, business, craft or profession in order to promote the supply of goods or services. The following general principles apply: advertising should be fair, honest, not misleading or impair children morally or physically. It should be clearly distinguishable as such and kept separate from other items by optical and/or acoustical means. The Television without Frontiers directive contains several specific rules for Television Advertising. The Commission published a interpretative communication to clarify some specific television advertising problems such as e.g. New Advertising Techniques.
The Commission proposed new advertising rules in the draft Audiovisual Media Services Directive.
