Why the EU shouldn't prematurely extend TSF

Ovum: Why the EU shouldn't prematurely extend Television Without Frontiers (TSF): "Intellect, the trade association for the UK hi-tech industry, yesterday voiced its concerns over the proposed extension of the Television Without Frontiers Directive, which would expand the scope of the directive to regulation of non-linear broadcasting services (essentially, unscheduled services downloaded on demand) over the Internet. Cisco, Yahoo, ITV, Vodafone say that such a move threatens blogs and interactive video content. Under the proposed law, many Internet "broadcasts" would face the same regulatory requirements on advertising content as traditional television broadcasting does. Comment: Many new-media companies, particularly startups, are concerned that the Television Without Frontiers extension will restrict the new on-demand services that are likely to develop over the next five years. Consumption patterns will bring together scheduled and unscheduled content, but a simplistically extended regulation would be technically unworkable in a non-scheduled broadcasting environment. "
